US will respond with “quick and decisive” action in the event of retaliation for the death of Qassem Soleimani

The decision to eliminate Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s al-Quds special forces, saved the lives of hundreds of Americans.

This was announced on January 3 on CNN by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

“Trump’s decision to eliminate General Suleimani saved the lives of Americans. There is no doubt about this. He actively planned large operations in the region. As he described, they would endanger the lives of tens, if not hundreds of Americans,” Pompeo emphasized.

The head of the Department of State called the liquidation of Suleymani “a blessing for the region,” as it reduced risks in the Middle East, and emphasized that the strategy chosen by President Donald Trump “will ultimately lead to success in the Middle East.”

“Suleimani planned the killing of Americans in the region, we had important reasons to strike. It was a legitimate action, we are fully confident that it was legal and correct from the point of view of strategy,” said Pompeo.

In addition, he threatened Iran with “quick and decisive” actions in case of retaliation for the death of a high-ranking general.

Pompeo also voiced another goal of the destruction of Kassem Suleimani – to show Tehran the whole “determination of America” and to persuade the Islamic Republic to decide “to defuse the situation and take actions appropriate to those undertaken by normal countries.”

Recall that the 63-year-old lieutenant general was killed at dawn on January 3 near Baghdad, where he arrived to meet with the Iraqi police commanders – the drone blew up two cars, in which, besides Suleimani, was also the deputy commander of the Iraqi People’s Mobilization Force Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The place of the Iranian military leader was already taken by his deputy brigadier general Ismail Kaani.

The spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the killing of the commander of the Iranian special forces and promised to take revenge on those who stand behind it. Khamenei also declared a three-day nationwide mourning. And President Hassan Rouhani promised to respond to what happened with a “more fierce confrontation” with America.

The Pentagon has already taken responsibility for the liquidation, noting that the operation was conducted as directed by US President Donald Trump. The immediate cause of the strike is considered an attempt to assault the US embassy in Baghdad on December 31, the responsibility for which the United States blamed on Tehran.
