U.S. President Donald Trump plans to receive hundreds of millions of doses of coronavirus vaccines by January 2021.
“This operation is called“ Warp Speed, ”which means“ big and fast, ”said President Trump.
Many public health experts acknowledge that this is an ambitious deadline. But they say that it may be possible to have a vaccine for emergency use in high-risk groups such as healthcare providers and the elderly.
“If everything goes miraculously. For the general population, this is still considered an 18-month period if everything goes well, ”said Anand Parekh from the Center for Bilateral Relations Policy.
After the November election, Mr. Trump focused on reopening the country and economy.
“With or without a vaccine, we are starting the process. And in many cases there are no vaccines, and if you get the virus or the flu, you get it. ”
Mr. Trump expressed support for protesters who want states to cancel orders to stay home and reopen the economy, although many do not fulfill the conditions for this.
Some of them are the states that voted for Trump in 2016. Analysts say Trump’s support for protesters could be politically damaging if coronavirus cases increase if the states are prematurely opened.
“This is a big risk,” he said. “And what we see in cases arising in rural areas and areas where Mr. Trump gets support seems like a step back against him,” said Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute.
This week, Trump also announced plans to provide enough medical and emergency equipment.
“Instead of quantities in 1-3 weeks, and we had fewer, the US government will collect quantities for three months, most of which are produced in the United States,” he said.
In the first weeks of the pandemic, some were criticized for lack of personal protective equipment.
“It is very important that we do our best to prepare for a pandemic in the fall or winter. It is likely that we will have the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, ”says Mr. Parech.
The administration plans to increase the production of these medical devices in order to reduce dependence on foreign companies and create jobs domestically.
