The youngest member of the Australian Open defeated 39-year-old Venus Williams

15-year-old American Corey Gauff, who is the youngest tennis player of the Australian Open, in the first round beat the oldest participant in the tournament – her compatriot 39-year-old Venus Williams. The meeting ended with a score of 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 3 in favor of Gauff.

The meeting held at the Margaret Court Arena lasted 1 hour 37 minutes. During this time, the 15-year-old tennis player performed two aces, made four double mistakes and realized two of six break points, giving her opponent one serve.

Gauff beat Williams Sr. for the second time in two personal meetings. In July 2019, she defeated the ex-first racket of the world in the first round of Wimbledon (6: 4, 6: 4).

In all, at Grand Slam tournaments, Gauff, ranked 67th in the WTA ranking, won the sixth match. She became the tenth tennis player in history to achieve a similar indicator before the onset of 16 years.
