A pug named Winston, who lives in a house in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, like his owners, became infected with a new coronavirus, according to The New York Post.
A case of a coronavirus-infected dog was confirmed by Dr. Christopher Woods of Duke University (Durham, North Carolina), who led the study, which tested the Maclean family of Chapel Hill and their pets.
According to the indicated sources, in the Maclean family of doctors, mother, father and son became infected with coronavirsuom (only the daughter did not get sick). It was decided to make a test for the dog, who coughed and refused to eat – the test result, as stated in the publications, was positive. If the information is correct, then we are talking about the first case of infection of a COVID-19 dog in the United States, and possibly in the world (several similar cases were previously reported in Hong Kong, but they have not been officially confirmed by WHO).
According to family representatives, Winston licks plates, sleeps in the same bed with people, licks their faces. They believe that the dog could have been infected by them.
Another dog and a cat live in the house. They were also tested, but the results of their tests are negative. Pug Winston is currently feeling well.
Note that so far there have been no reports of human infection with coronavirus from domestic animals.
After the “Hong Kong incident”, the World Health Organization recommended that people with COVID-19 who are in home quarantine, just in case, should avoid close contact with their pets and entrust other family members to take care of them.
