An accurate hit by Roberto Firmino allowed Jurgen Klopp’s wards to escape from the unnecessary loss of points at the Molineux Stadium (1: 2).
In the twenty-fourth round of the English Premier League as of Thursday evening there was an open question regarding only one match. On a visit to Wolverhampton came the main contender for gaining champion status this season – Liverpool, with a very obvious task. Competitors wards Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City and Leicester, did not allow misfires in their confrontations, so the “red” had no choice but to beat the “wolves” in their den. Unless, of course, the task of maintaining an overly comfortable separation from the pursuers was put at the forefront.
The last meeting of these rivals at the Molineux Stadium marked the end of the long series of Liverpool without defeat in this stadium. Wolverhampton deprived Klopp team of the need to worry about the FA Cup at an early stage of his last draw (2: 1), thereby obtaining the first home victory over the “Reds” from the distant 1981. Consequently, guests from the banks of the Mersey River came to their rival for only one thing – to answer cup resentments with success as part of the regular season.
The hosts tried to make a sortie to the alien half already at the very beginning of the fight, but returned from this hunt without prey, not using their chance during the drawing of a promising standard on the flank. But in Liverpool, the drawing of prepared situations at the gates of others turned out to be extremely effective. Trent Alexander-Arnold performed a pitch from the corner from the corner on the right flank, and in the near corner of the goalkeeper Jordan Henderson managed to successfully play the head. Patriciu reached for the ball in a jump, but could not deflect the threat in full.
Wolverhampton had chances to regain equality in the scoreboard, because there was still enough playing time left. And it was definitely not necessary for the owners to dispose of them in the same way as Dendonker did, having missed after executing a header past the far post. The flanks worked for Wolverhampton in the first half as it should, although Traore was not yet included in the proper degree.
At the same time, Liverpool played modest counterattacks, and some of them could have been completed with an exact blow by Mohammed Salah, if the defenders had not rushed to the embrasure at the last moment. The offensive potential of Klopp’s team was seriously demolished only in the middle of the first half due to Sadio Mane’s injury, and the effectiveness of Salah in completing the attacks left much to be desired.
The starting segment of the second half did not correct the situation for the Egyptian, but Adam Traore began to reveal himself at the “wolves”. The flank defenders of the “Reds” were exhausted in a matter of minutes, after which the Spaniard began to torment the center of defense. Here even Van Dyck was forced to flinch. It was the Dutchman who did not manage to cover the scoring feed of Traore from the right flank, which Raul Jimenez completed with an accurate header to the left post.
It seemed that the wards of Santo would be able to repeat the same cup success, however, the guests were clearly against this scenario. Salah exploded in spectacular dribbling at someone else’s penalty area in the final ten minutes of regular time, after which Henderson opened the defense with a cutting pass into the penalty area at Firmino, and Roberto forced the experienced Rui Patricio to capitulate. The rest of the home team followed the example of their goalkeeper, and Klopp’s team calmly retained their success right up to the final whistle.
In the next round, Wolves will play against Manchester United and Liverpool will fight at home against Southampton, but to begin with, they will restore the gap in the unplayed away match against West Ham.
