Facebook has blocked a network of accounts related to Russian intelligence

On Facebook, the creation of a network of accounts that were used by the military intelligence of the Russian Federation to spread false information against Ukraine, as well as other countries of Eastern Europe, was suspended. This is stated in the official statement of Facebook.

Facebook emphasized that the people behind the creation of these accounts were associated with Russian military intelligence.

“Although the people behind this network tried to hide their identity and coordination, our investigation revealed ties with Russian military intelligence services,” the company said.

The head of Facebook’s cyber security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said that during the last Russian operation, more than 100 Facebook accounts were used, as well as on other platforms. Russian intelligence officers created fake accounts that allegedly belonged to journalists in the target countries. After that, they engaged in the dissemination of false information through the media and politicians.

“We have long known that these people are looking for genuine voices to enhance their stories. It’s rather a classic reconnaissance operation, the purpose of which is to manipulate key people to achieve a high effect, ”said Gleicher.
