The closure of borders, according to European conservatives, helped in the initial stage of the fight against a pandemic, but now has lost its meaning. The European Commission must submit a plan for their opening.
Representatives of the largest conservative faction in the European Parliament – the European People’s Party (EVP) – demanded that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, take steps to abolish border controls in EU countries from May 15. This is stated in a letter distributed on Tuesday, May 12, which was signed by many heads of national delegations of the parties included in the faction.
In addition, the letter stated the requirement to abolish mandatory quarantine for EU citizens who enter other EU countries. Conservatives believe that at the initial stage of the pandemic, the closure of borders was justified, but now the situation with the spread of coronavirus in the EU countries is at about the same level, and the restrictions have lost their meaning.
Plan for Gradually Opening Borders
On Wednesday, the European Commission is going to present a plan for the gradual opening of internal borders in the EU. The dpa agency, which has a draft plan at its disposal, reports that it provides for the gradual opening of borders, which should last several months.
