Beijing imposed sanctions against US diplomats working in China. It is reported by CCTV. The restrictions were in response to US Department of State sanctions against Chinese diplomats in October.
According to media reports, Americans will be obliged to notify the Chinese Foreign Ministry in advance of meetings with local authorities, as well as representatives of education and science.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry called on Washington to correct mistakes and lift sanctions.
In early October, the United States imposed visa restrictions for Chinese citizens involved, according to Washington, in violation of the rights of Uyghurs. Already working in the United States, diplomats were required to inform in advance about contacts with the American authorities. Beijing in response accused the United States of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
According to the UN, human rights are violated in the Xinjiang Uygur region of China. In Chinese centers of mass detention or the so-called “re-education camps”, more than a million Uighurs and other members of Muslim minorities are in custody.
China rejects all allegations and claims that terrorist groups operate in the region.
